Propagation update: Plans have been lodged with the Surf Coast Shire to erect a 5 x 8 metre propagating shed and 4 x 6 metre greenhouse behind the Memorial Hall northeast of the ANGAIR Office.

The plan also includes space for hardening tables and a landscape plan to minimise visual impacts on the surrounding area. Details of the plans are available at the ANGAIR Office. Copies of key documents are posted on the notice board at the front of the building.

The Surf Coast Shire has granted a permit subject to certain conditions: limited operating hours, the development of a risk management plan for the handling of propagation materials and that Mawson Avenue is not used for access to the site. However, the Shire has not issued the permit pending an appeal that has been lodged with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). Building cannot commence until the appeals process is finalised. The appeal is due to be heard in June. Any ANGAIR members who have experience or knowledge of the VCAT process would be very welcome to assist the ANGAIR Committee with the appeal.

ANGAIR received the Surf Coast Shire Australia Day Community Event of the Year Award for 2016 at the Australia Day Barbecue on the riverbank on January 26. Our award is for the Wildflower and Art Weekend and would not be possible without the work of 80 or more volunteers who contribute to the annual event.

The Green Army team is doing valuable work for several conservation groups, including ANGAIR, the Surf Coast Shire and GORCC. Jane Shearer, the previous team leader, has gained a position in Conservation Volunteers Australia and we now look forward to an equally rewarding relationship with the new team leader, Tom Fahey. They recently spent several very hot days weeding Boneseed and Sallow Wattle on the Alcoa Lease area south of the cement plant on Camp Road.

ANGAIR’s members have an excellent relationship with the Anglesea Primary School. This year will be very exciting as the Parents’ Club is funding more landscaping work in the School Grounds. ANGAIR will be supplying 1200 plants for this project and we will have a planting day in May provided we get rain. ANGAIR volunteers on the gardening roster for the School spend an hour every 6 weeks working with the children on Tuesday afternoons starting at 2.30pm. The jobs are typical gardening jobs with the students in small groups of 4-6 with as many adults.

This year we will also have propagating sessions with the junior grades, which will be messy but fun. If any members would like to be on the roster, please contact the Principal, Pamela Sandlant at the School 5263 1231 or This email address is being protected from spambots.
