Magpie-larks may look like small magpies but they are not magpies or larks, and are actually in the same taxonomy family as Satin Flycatchers.
I am sure many readers will have realised the male and female birds have different plumage around the face. The male has a black face/bib and white eyebrow, and the female has an all-white face with no white eyebrow. Juveniles and immature birds have intermediate features of the adult birds.
Hard to prove, but it is thought every bird has its own slightly different and unique colour pattern (putting aside the gender differences). For instance, in the accompanying photos, the female bird has some additional small white blotches on the back, when compared with the male. So, when you see a Magpie-lark proudly and purposefully strutting around, remember it is wearing its very own unique outfit!
