Some of us are lucky enough to live full-time in the Angair postcode, others travel back and forward to Melbourne regularly. It is more difficult to identify and appreciate birds when moving at 100 kph, but sometimes birds come into view.

Black KiteAlong the highway, there are the usual strong personalities: Magpie, Magpie-lark, Raven, Rainbow Lorikeet; and the growing rows of Starlings on the power lines. Coming past Werribee, there is a good chance of soaring Pelicans, with fat beaks and wings.

My favourite highway bird is the Black Kite. The photo shows the bird in detail. Wheeling, twisting and effortlessly turning not so far above the road, the slightly forked tail is distinctive. I reckon if I come back as a highway bird in the next life, I’d like to be a Black Kite!
