The Grey Shrike-thrush is another great bird, regularly seen and heard in the area. They have two main calls: a loud single-note chong, and an exciting, melodic, beautiful call which The Australian Bird Guide describes as: pur-pur-pur-QUEE-YULE. You can listen to an actual rendition on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBQxs2TRLo8.

The chong call is probably a contact call and can be heard more-or-less all year round in my experience. The pur-pur-pur call is normally heard in spring and summer. On 9 June on a visit to Gherang Gherang I was surprised when the thrushes were hell bent on pur-pur-pur! A week later not a single pur-pur-pur and just a forest of chongs.

Remembering the very heavy rain preceding 9 June, I think the thrushes were very excited about all that rain and the water lying around and were purring with delight!

The photo shows a male bird but male and female birds have only minor differences.
