The Surf Coast Shire is asking people to report wildlife deaths on roads throughout the shire on the iNaturalist website.
iNaturalist is an online network of people who share biodiversity information, help members identify any flora and fauna they may encounter and transfer that to data depositories for scientists to use. You can contribute by downloading the iNaturalist app.
Gabrielle O’Shea of the shire’s Environment Unit said that possible uses of the data could inform discussions about speed limits and possum bridges on certain roads in the shire.
Although the project does not seek road collision data for major roads — such as the Great Ocean Road which are the responsibility of VicRoads — the shire would pass on any such information, she said.
Visit the Shire’s website for full details about the project.
