Swamp Antechinus

Fauna survey workshop

In this workshop you will learn about

  • Fauna survey techniques such as humane trapping and camera trapping
  • The current status of endangered mammals such as the Swamp Antechinus (pictured above – picture taken at Painkalac Creek in 2021), Southern Brown Bandicoot and the Broad-toothed Rat in the Painkalac Valley
  • What could be done to improve local conditions for these endangered animals

In this workshop you will watch the traps being opened and the animals carefully examined, measured and released without causing them any harm.

Elliott trap
Elliott traps are used worldwide by environmental and conservation groups to humanely trap small marsupials and rodents

You will learn about the amazing marsupials and rodents that you never knew existed in the Painkalac Valley – why they are endangered and the important safe haven/refuge that exists around the Painkalac Estuary, where the swamp meets the sand dunes.

Online bookings through Humantix are essential. Meet at the Great Ocean Road car park opposite Lialeeta Road, Fairhaven.
