The Victorian Farmers Federation, Invasive Species Council and Environment Victoria have joined in an unusual alliance to lobby the Victorian Government for stronger deer control measures.
According to Environment Victoria, the state now has the largest proportion of the country’s 1-2 million deer.
Late last month Parks Victoria began another phase of its existing four-year deer control program in the Great Otway National Park. Licensed professional shooting contractors will shoot deer and other invasive species such as foxes, goats and pigs between March and June.
Visitor areas and walking tracks will be closed temporarily to allow shooting mainly at night. There will be no operations during school holidays and on Friday and Saturday nights except in more remote areas of the park.
