It was high fives all round recently when the first Swamp Antechinus was trapped on the Lot 2 regeneration block. A dead specimen was found there a few years ago but none since then.

Members of the Geelong Field Naturalists Club – who have experience in the delicate art of live trapping – were inspecting some trial traps in preparation for a series of surveys of small mammals in the Painkalac Valley. The first in the series will occur early this December. The male animal was in very good health and everyone hopes he has some similarly healthy companions.

The Field Nats’ team also recorded three female Swamp Antechinus in the Painkalac Estuary dunes where researchers Dr Barbara Wilson and Dr Mark Garkaklis believe there is now a small colony.
